Building the Physics Workforce of Tomorrow

Abstract
Preparing physics students for the workforce of tomorrow requires a multifaceted effort: engaging and exciting young students about STEM and physics, recruiting and retaining diverse talent, and developing educational programs that emphasize foundational concepts and transferable skills while adapting to evolving industry needs. In this talk, I will discuss our work on the importance of student identity and belonging in STEM, as well as the role of evidence-based teaching practices in supporting student success. I will then describe our efforts to build quantum science and engineering programs that span the educational pipeline, from elementary school through graduate education. Building a robust quantum workforce, and, more broadly, a strong physics workforce, will require incorporating what we have learned about effective teaching, identity, and belonging into these programs. I will highlight our quantum programs and how we are integrating these principles, including connections to related fields such as biosciences and nanomaterials. I will conclude with a forward-looking perspective on the strategies and educational practices needed to successfully prepare a diverse and adaptable physics workforce for the future.
