B.S. in Physics

With a Bachelor of Science in physics from VCU, you’ll graduate knowing how to perform scientific reasoning and complex problem-solving.

You’ll master the analytical skills needed to take on technical problems in physics, and you’ll have the ability to translate what you know to others, thanks to your sharp communication skills. That could be your launchpad for a career as an automotive engineer, environmental compliance inspector, web developer, high school teacher, regulatory affairs specialist, astrophysicist or any of a number of physics-related jobs.

Admission requirements, degree requirements, recommended course sequences and more can be found at VCU Bulletin.

Concentrations

In addition to the standard B.S. in physics curriculum, the department offers two concentrations.

Nanoscience

Prepare for careers in industry, academia, applied health and nanoscience fields, or develop a strong foundation for continued study of nanoscience at the graduate level.

Pre-medical

Prepare for a health sciences career using physics-based technologies. Students from this program who apply to medical school will have a distinctively rigorous preparation. The curriculum also prepares students for graduate medical physics, biomedical engineering and M.D.-Ph.D. programs.

Double Major in Engineering and Physics

This program, administered by the School of Engineering, gives students majoring in biomedical, chemical, life science, electrical, computer, mechanical and nuclear engineering a chance to double up their majors with physics. This means you can become an expert in two fields! To do this, you'll need to take between nine to 17 credits, in addition to what's needed for your main engineering major.

Extended Teacher Preparation Program

Physics majors interested in teaching careers in elementary, middle, secondary or special education can enter the Extended Teacher Preparation Program, which results in the simultaneous awarding of a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in teaching. For more information about this program, jointly administered by the School of Education and the College of Humanities and Sciences, contact the School of Education
